The Downtown Plaza
The Downtown Plaza is a great place to hear local bands play. It is the perfect place to be heard and to express yourself. Many people go sit in the Plaza and observe what is going on and what events are being held. These concerts usually take place on Friday nights. They are also free which persuades many college students to go and enjoy. There are many types of genres that people play so every week is something different.

#2 Chico Musican
Although they're not known on a national stage, a local band that I enjoy is Ma Muse. These two native Chico women create music that is, in some ways, specific to this area of the world, and in other ways, it's capable of resonating with any one who considers themselves a member of the human family. Ma Muse and they're camp of followers are avid cyclists and naturalists and could be called, if one was so inclined, "hippie hipsters singing Chico folk songs".

#1 Chico Writers
When researching Chico writers, I did not have to look far to find something interesting. In fact, two of my favorite writers that are connected to Chico are current and former professors of mine right here at CSU Chico. Dr. Janaja Lalich and Dr. Tony Waters are both experts in their fields, and both doctors of sociology.
With past turmoils often comes great insight as I saw when taking Dr. Lalich's class Sociology of Cults. Dr. Lalich spent 10 years working for what she thought was a social movement that turned into a political cult. Since the ending of her cult, Lalich recieved her doctorate in Sociology and has written numerous books, becoming a leading theorist in the field.
Dr. Tony Waters has been teaching at CSU Chico for many years now, and has also published numerous books. In his class Sociology of World Affairs we are currently reading his book "The Persistence of Subsistence Agriculture," which is based off of the time he spent working with refugees in Tanzania. Also an expert in his field, Waters was awarded professor of the year in 2011 at Chico State.
Both of these writers are great examples of people who live and contribute the culture and lively hood of Chico and also CSU Chico. I am grateful to have had them as teachers, and hope that others can become enlightened by their books as I have.

Their career in music started by them playing local parties around Chico. They ended up getting signed by American Recordings when they were still students at Chico State. This made The Mother Hips “labelmates” with artists such as Johnny Cash and Tom Petty. That is pretty cool that I lived in the same dorms that these guys did.

In downtown Chico there are unlimited places to where you can find art. Throughout all of downtown you can see art in different forms. There are many benches with unique artwork designs on them, sometimes they are made out of abstract materials. There are murals all throughout the city with many interest designs and ideas. One of my favorite ones is a piece right near the boys and girls club and it is on the backside of a building. It is a painting of all of the major bridges connecting the bay area together and it made me think about where i'm from. It's cool how one unique piece of art can make you think about things you don't always get to think about and that's one of the great things about the art in this fine city of Chico. There are also sculptures made by people for people to enjoy. One of the more well known sculptures downtown is the hands that are closing in together as if they were to clap hands. This is right in front of they boys and girls club.

Chico Literature and Poetry
Woodstock’s Pizza does not seem like a place that holds literary events, but every week this pizza place in Downtown Chico holds an open-mic night. People will read their poetry or just even talk sometimes, but it is really interesting to listen to these people’s words.

There are also many places in Chico that will hold events such as a poetry slam. Different café’s and stuff will host these poetry slams every once in a while. Café Culture is a Café in Chico that used to put on different literary events. Poetry slams involve people competing against each other with their poems. It is really cool how good some people are at competing in these poetry slams.

Lyons Bookstore is an awesome local bookstore that has some decent prices on books. This is a bookstore that I enjoy bringing my business to instead of a huge bookstore like Barnes and Noble. They have a good selection of books and I never leave without being helped by someone.
Avenue 9 Gallery is an art gallery in Chico that also hosts many events throughout the year. They hold many events that don’t involve “art,” but rather poetry or music. Avenue 9 Gallery is a great place to check out local art, but there is more than just art here.

Libraries are also places that will hold random literary events. This includes writing poetry, watching documentaries, reading clubs, and much more. These are all great opportunities that the library provides the public.

Every year in about February or January chico holds the "artabout" festival to help showcase and support local artists held in downtown chico. Another showcase that is held in chico is ARtoberfest a much larger festival featuring artists from paradise, redding, oriville and other northern California area artists. Along with annual showcases there are many coffee shops and art galleys in chico, empire coffee displays art by local artists in their coffee shop and will occasionally have a live band or art show.

Known for being very diverse, Chico is filled with people from all over the world with new images and ideas for the future of our planet. With power and ambition to this magnitude, Chico has a large population dedicating their lives to literature, poetry, comedy, etc. One unique feature of Chico literature is that many of the talent comes from the regular everyday person. “Has Beans” is a Coffee shop located at 501 Main St. in down town Chico, and has been around since 1999. This local shop has become well known for hosting poetry night, stand up comedy, philosophy and other spoken words and its completely made up performances by local writers. On the “Has Beans” website it is said that the sign up sheet for these nights tend to fill up fast so sign up quick, even though this coffee shop doesn't host many famous authors, the local level can produce many cool ideas that many everyday middle class people can relate to.

Chico's music scene is extraordinarily diverse and fit very well with the city's art culture. Ranging from jazz to indie pop to techno to punk to heavy metal and avant garde, there is no shortage of creativity, or concerts for that matter. This small city is lucky to have such a talented mix of musicianship. The local musician that i found was the Mystic Roots.
